BlackBull Markets review 2026: the New Zealand broker, tested honestly
BlackBull is the story of two brothers who built a broker in Auckland in 2014 and pushed it into the best-rated tier of the industry. On paper the offer looks good: MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView, tight ECN spreads. The real question for an international client is which entity actually takes you on, and that's more nuanced than it looks. Here's the full breakdown.
Quick verdict
BlackBull scores 4.2/5. Technically it's a very good broker: arguably the best platform lineup we cover (cTrader on top of MT4/MT5/TradingView), competitive ECN spreads, fast execution and a strong Trustpilot reputation. What keeps it a notch behind a CySEC broker for European clients is regulation. You sign with the offshore Seychelles entity, without the EU protection layer. Good broker, just be clear-eyed about the framework.

Regulation: NZ on one side, Seychelles on the other
BlackBull leads with its FMA New Zealand licence (Black Bull Group Limited, FSP403326), and rightly so, because the FMA is a top-tier regulator. The catch is that the licence only covers NZ residents. For everyone else, you're onboarded under BBG Limited, the Seychelles entity (FSA SD045). That's a much lighter offshore jurisdiction: no EU regulation, no MiFID II passport, no EU deposit guarantee and limited recourse in a dispute. It isn't a scam, the firm is established and well-rated, but the regulatory safety net isn't the same as with a CySEC broker like Axi.
One point that needs clearing up: the FMA alert floating around online does not concern BlackBull. It targets impersonator sites cloning its name, and BlackBull itself requested the warning. Don't fall for the "BlackBull = scam" framing. The scam issue is third-party clones, not the broker.
Accounts and fees
The classic lineup is three ECN accounts. ECN Standard (from $0) is commission-free, so the cost sits in the spread, from ~0.8 pip on EUR/USD. ECN Prime (from $0) drops spreads to 0.0 pip with ~$4 to $6 per round-turn lot. ECN Institutional (from $20,000) lowers commission further for high volume. One fee worth flagging: about $5 per withdrawal, since the process is semi-manual. On inactivity fees, sources contradict each other. The official support page says none, some reviews cite $10/month after a year. Check the live support page before committing.
Platforms: the real strength
This is where BlackBull stands out. You can pick MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader or the TradingView integration. cTrader in particular is a treat for anyone who likes a level-II order book and clean execution, and few brokers offer it. In-house, BlackBull CopyTrader handles copy trading and BlackBull Trade is the mobile app. There's also BlackBull Invest for share investing, which you shouldn't confuse with the CFD offer.
A note on a marketing figure: the "26,000+ instruments" you'll see refers to BlackBull Invest (shares, ETFs, bonds in direct investing), not CFDs. The CFD/forex side is closer to ~1,750 instruments: 70+ forex pairs, indices, commodities, crypto CFDs and share CFDs.
Leverage
Through the Seychelles entity, leverage goes up to 1:500. Here's the classic trap: because the entity isn't EU-regulated, the ESMA 30:1 cap doesn't apply. More available leverage isn't an advantage, it's just a longer rope to hang yourself with. Some clients also report effective leverage below the advertised figure. Treat 1:500 as a theoretical maximum, not a target.
Who it's for
Choose BlackBull if you're an already-autonomous trader who wants cTrader or a wide platform choice, tight ECN spreads, and you knowingly accept an offshore framework. Look elsewhere if EU regulation is non-negotiable for you. In that case, Axi under its CySEC entity ticks the protection box better. And if you're a beginner, remember that no platform choice makes up for weak risk management.
How to open an account
