OKX vs Binance 2026: in France the question already got answered

For years this comparison came down to fees and order book depth. Since 1 July 2026 it comes down to something far simpler: Binance is no longer allowed to open an account for a French resident. Here is what happened, with the dates, and what it means if you still hold funds there.

What happened, in order

DateEvent
27 January 2025OKX Europe Ltd receives its MiCA authorisation from the Malta MFSA
30 March 2026Orderly wind-down begins for providers without a MiCA authorisation
24 June 2026Binance notifies its French customers that services will stop
1 July 2026AMF transitional period ends, Binance France SAS ceases its services

Roughly two million French users were affected. This was neither a sanction nor a scandal: Binance France SAS simply did not secure a MiCA authorisation before the deadline, its application still being under review in early 2026.

Binance in France, the timeline: Jan 2025 OKX MiCA licence, Mar 2026 Orderly wind-down, Jun 2026 Customers notified, Jul 2026 Binance FR stops.
Four dates carry it: the deadline was known, it surprised nobody, and not everyone cleared the bar.

Why the bar was high

MiCA is not a rebranding of the old PSAN status. The authorisation demands reinforced governance, regulatory capital, a cybersecurity framework, formal conflict-of-interest management and precise rules on segregating client assets. Several platforms that were comfortable under the French regime did not clear that bar in time, and Binance was one of them.

What it changes for you

If you live in France, a feature-by-feature comparison is beside the point: one of the two cannot serve you. OKX opens accounts through OKX Europe Ltd, authorised by the MFSA on 27 January 2025 and passported across the European Economic Area. That difference in status is what settles it, not a fee table.

Outside the European Union the debate stands. Binance remains the largest platform in the world by volume, and nothing above contradicts that. What changed is geographic, not qualitative.

If you still hold funds on Binance

Do not leave them sitting. Two exits: transfer to a MiCA-licensed platform, or withdraw to a personal wallet whose keys you control. The second removes any dependence on an operator, in exchange for owning the backup problem yourself. Either way, moving early beats relying on a support desk in wind-down.

On where to move, we covered OKX's regulatory file in our trust and reputation evaluation, its European pricing in the tier-by-tier fee guide, and the other licensed options in the exchange ranking.

Frequently asked

Is Binance still available in France in 2026?

No. Binance France SAS did not obtain a MiCA authorisation and stopped serving French customers on 1 July 2026, the end of the transitional period set by the AMF. Customers were notified on 24 June 2026 and roughly two million French users were affected. The orderly wind-down had already started on 30 March 2026, from which point providers without an authorisation could only carry out strictly necessary operations.

OKX or Binance: which one should you pick in 2026?

From France, regulation settles the question rather than features: Binance can no longer open an account for a French resident, OKX can, through OKX Europe Ltd, authorised by the Malta MFSA on 27 January 2025 and passported across the European Economic Area. Outside the European Union the comparison reopens, since Binance remains the largest platform in the world by volume.

What should you do with crypto still held on Binance?

Move it rather than leave it. Two routes: transfer the assets to a MiCA-licensed platform, or withdraw them to a personal wallet whose keys you hold. The second removes any dependence on an operator, at the cost of being responsible for the backup yourself. Either way, acting early beats relying on a support desk that is winding down.

Why did Binance fail to get a MiCA authorisation?

Its application was still under review in early 2026 and did not complete before the deadline. MiCA sets a considerably higher bar than the former French PSAN registration: reinforced governance, regulatory capital, cybersecurity requirements, formal conflict-of-interest management and precise rules on segregating client assets. Several platforms comfortable under the old regime did not clear that bar in time.
