On paper, mid-2026 Gate looks like a winner: MiCA CASP licence from Malta's MFSA (September 2025), a PSD2 payment licence added in February 2026, competitive fees and an altcoin catalog that rivals anyone's. The asterisk is historical: credible on-chain researchers allege a large 2018 hack that was never disclosed. Recent operations look clean, and the licence changes its legal standing in Europe, but transparency debts age badly in this industry.
The MiCA licence, and why it matters now
Since July 1, 2026, the EU transition period is over: platforms without a CASP authorization must stop serving EU clients. Gate Technology Ltd cleared that bar early, with an MFSA licence granted in September 2025 covering exchange and custody, passported across 29 EU/EEA countries, plus a Malta PSD2 licence (February 2026) for regulated stablecoin payments. In a month where Binance entered a forced wind-down in France, that piece of paper became Gate's strongest argument, arguably ahead of its catalog.

Spot at 0.10% maker / 0.10% taker base, futures at 0.02% maker / 0.05% taker, both scaling down with 30-day volume (around 0.016%/0.0375% on futures at $15M monthly). That undercuts the industry averages and matches the sharpest offshore competitors, with a licence on top.
The 2018 question
Two separate stories, often confused. The documented one: in late 2018, attackers compromised the StatCounter analytics script to target Gate.io users in a supply-chain attack, caught and reported by security researchers. The alleged one is heavier: investigator ZachXBT published on-chain evidence pointing to a roughly $230M theft from Gate in April 2018, never disclosed by the exchange, with portions of the funds attributed to North Korean actors and still moving years later. Gate has not confirmed it. Our reading: the allegation is credible enough to price in, and the absence of any comparable incident in recent years, plus published proof of reserves, is what keeps the score at 3.5 rather than lower.
