How to buy your first cryptocurrency

5 clear steps to place your first buy order in 2026, even if you have never opened a crypto app. With the concrete pitfalls to avoid at steps 2 and 4.

Pourquoi cette leçon est importante

This is the "rite of passage" lesson: going from "I'm watching" to "I own my first satoshis." We are intentionally precise to spare you the costly mistakes: an unregulated platform (blocked withdrawals), 2FA enabled too late (drained account), a first purchase on a memecoin (worth zero in 3 months). By the end of this tutorial, you will have your first wallet funded in BTC or ETH - the clean way.

In 30 seconds

  • Choose a regulated exchange (MiCA / VASP). We recommend XT for copy trading and MEXC for the widest catalog.
  • Create your account, then enable 2FA before any deposit.
  • Verify your identity (KYC) with an ID document plus a selfie.
  • Deposit 50-100 EUR by SEPA transfer (free) or card (1-3% fees).
  • Buy BTC or ETH with a Market order. Done.

1Choose a regulated exchange

An exchange is the platform where you will deposit your euros and buy crypto. In 2026, in Europe, you must choose a platform with a VASP license or MiCA compliance (EU). Rogue or unregulated platforms mean a risk of blocked withdrawals.

Our top picks for a European beginner in 2026:

XT - for copy trading

  • Professional copy trading (follow our traders in 1 click)
  • Reduced fees with VIP2 status via our link
  • Dedicated VIP Telegram channels
  • Good if you are starting in spot and want to learn by following

MEXC - for the widest catalog

  • One of the largest listings of pairs on the market
  • Low fees, accessible interface
  • Bonus available through our link
  • Good for exploring beyond BTC and ETH later on

To avoid for a first purchase: decentralized exchanges (Uniswap, PancakeSwap) - reserved for advanced use with a wallet, gas fees and slippage risk. Stick to a regulated centralized exchange for your first time.

2Create the account and enable 2FA

Email, password, and off you go. Three non-negotiable rules:

1. Dedicated email. Create a separate email for crypto (Gmail/ProtonMail). Do not reuse your personal or work email; it is a phishing target.

2. Unique password. At least 16 characters, never reused anywhere else. Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password) - not a sticky note or a .txt on your desktop.

3. 2FA with Google Authenticator (NOT SMS). Enable two-factor authentication immediately, before the first deposit. Use an app (Google Authenticator, Authy) - not SMS 2FA, which is vulnerable to SIM swapping.

Secure login with 2FA1. Password--------(what you know)2. 2FA code183 472(what you have)3. LoginOKaccess grantedWithout the 2FA code, a thief who has your password cannot get in.

3Verify your identity (KYC)

KYC (Know Your Customer) is mandatory on all regulated exchanges in Europe since MiCA in late 2024. In practice:

  • A photo of your ID document (national ID, passport, driving licence)
  • A selfie holding your document next to your face
  • Sometimes: a proof of address less than 3 months old

Timing: validation between 10 minutes and 24h depending on the exchange and the time of submission. If rejected, it is usually because of a blurry photo or glare on the document - simply redo the process in better lighting conditions.

Classic trap: someone offers you a "no KYC" platform. Either it is not regulated (and illegal), or you will never be able to withdraw your euros to your bank account. Every serious platform in 2026 requires KYC. That is normal.

4Deposit your first euros

Two main options to fund your exchange account in euros:

SEPA transfer

  • Free (0% fees)
  • 1-2 business days
  • No ridiculous cap
  • Recommended for amounts > 500 EUR

Bank card

  • Instant
  • 1 to 3% fees
  • Limited cap (often 1000 EUR/day)
  • Fine for a quick first test

Our beginner recommendation: deposit 50 to 100 EUR for your first try. No more. Not to be stingy - to leave room for error without a painful loss. Once you are comfortable with the platform and have placed 2-3 orders, scale up if you want.

5Place your first buy order

You have 100 EUR on your exchange. You click "Buy", you choose BTC or ETH, and there you see 2 order types:

Market order

You buy immediately at the current price. Simple, fast, zero hassle.

Use this for your first purchase. The price gap between the moment you click and execution is negligible on BTC/ETH (high liquidity).

Limit order

You set the price at which you want to buy. The order only executes if the market reaches that price.

For later, when you want to optimize your entries. It lets you buy BTC at 95k$ if you find 100k$ too expensive. But the order may never execute if the price does not drop.

Once the order is placed, your 100 EUR turn into 0.001 BTC (or equivalent) in your exchange wallet. It is instant. You can see it in the "Spot" or "Wallet" tab.

You have just bought your first crypto. Welcome to the space. Do nothing else this week - watch the price, see how it moves, learn the vocabulary. This is your observation phase.

The 5 pitfalls to avoid on your first purchase

  1. 1. Investing too much money at the startCrypto moves 5-15% a week under normal conditions. If you put in 5000 EUR at once with no experience, you will panic at the first 20% drop and sell at the worst moment. Start with 50-100 EUR.

  2. 2. Buying a memecoin recommended on TikTok90% of memecoins launched in 2024-2026 are worth zero 6 months later. First purchase = BTC or ETH, full stop. Memecoins are for later, with money you accept losing.

  3. 3. Clicking a fake exchange emailWithin 48h of signing up, you will receive phishing emails impersonating the exchange. Always check the sender address. No legitimate exchange asks for your seed phrase or passwords by email.

  4. 4. Not enabling 2FA before the depositAn account with no 2FA plus a leaked password = drained in 5 minutes. 2FA is non-negotiable. Enable it before you send a single euro.

  5. 5. Following an "advisor" on Telegram or WhatsAppNo serious person contacts strangers in private to "make them 10x." 100% of unsolicited messages on Telegram or Instagram are scams. Block, report, forget.
